Hear how converged policy management can benefit your organisation

Until now, real-time charging and policy management have been implemented as separate applications. But a business case is emerging to integrate, and potentially even converge, these two functions. To date, stand-alone policy management systems have been effective at policing network bandwidth and throttling users based on preset quotas. But are service providers missing the enormous opportunity that comes with converging this functionality with that of real-time rating and charging?

By converging policy and charging functions, policy decisions can become more valuable to the operator and relevant to the customer. By blending information from the charging application about the subscriber’s pricing, balances, spending and preferences, more intelligent and personalized policies can be created and deployed.

This webinar will explore how an integrated approach for charging and policy helps service providers address the growing need to cope with large volumes of network traffic, heavy data users and bill shock issues in a cost effective, sustainable way.

Join this Webinar to understand:

• The current state of real-time charging and policy management applications and deployments

• Why policy and charging developed as separate applications and some of the gaps resulting from discrete implementations

• How subscriber policy management and OCS are converging to enable differentiation

• How operators will benefit from an integrated policy and charging solution such as:

• How to use subscriber bandwidth thresholds as inflection points to cross- or upsell customers, based on knowledge of their historical spending

• Ways to improve subscriber experience through added visibility into subscriber balances, pricing, billing relationships, credit history, balance sharing and other criteria

• What the operational and technical benefits of an integrated platform for policy and charging are

• How better-informed business decisions can be made when rolling out new services that are compelling as well as profitable.

Telmap announces inaugural Telmap Metrics Report

0

Telmap, the specialist in mobile location-based services, today announced the inaugural edition of Telmap Metrics Report, a quarterly report looking at local search, mapping and navigation usage and activity conducted through Telmap based solutions.

Telmap provides white-label, fully hosted and managed LBS to over 26 mobile operators globally. As such, Telmap has a broad perspective and vast knowledge that when viewed collectively can be beneficial to the LBS industry in general and for location-based advertising specifically, as it provides valuable insights to advertisers.

The first report summarizes the fourth quarter of 2010 (October-December). As of the end of the fourth quarter, Telmap users show a truly global footprint, navigating in more than 100 countries, through more than 400 million kilometres, which is equivalent to approximately 567 trips to the moon and back or 10,023 trips around the world, in just one quarter. During Q3, 2010, that naturally included summer travels, Telmap users navigated through more than 0.5 billion kilometres, it says.

Some of the most popular search terms include IKEA, gas, cinema and hospitals, while the popular points of interest (POI) categories include restaurants, shopping, gas stations and hospitals, indicating that people use Telmap based solutions to search, map and navigate to many of their day-to-day destinations and activities.

“Telmap sees openness as an important pillar of its market leadership strategy. We have decided to introduce the report in order to provide and share some insights with the industry’s movers, shakers and influencers, so we can all work together on making location-based services a growing and prosperous industry”, said Motti Kushnir, Telmap CMO.

The report will be published on a quarterly basis and will be available for download at www.telmap.com.

Ubiquisys announces world’s first personal femtocell for the iPhone

0

Ubiquisys, the developer of 3G and LTE intelligent cells, today announced the world’s first attocell – a personal femtocell.  Designed primarily for people travelling abroad, it enables mobile calls to be made and received as though in their home
country. Although developed specifically for the iPhone, the attocell works out of the box with any 3G phone, and has also been tested with Blackberry, Nokia and Android smartphones. Ubiquisys is already in discussions with several mobile operators about the product.

The attocell connects to a user’s laptop via USB, which provides power
and an internet connection.  It then analyses the IP address and radio
environment to determine which country it is in, and sets its 3G radio
power accordingly to below the licenced level.  In some countries its
range will be just 5mm, in other countries, it could cover a whole room.

Like Ubiquisys femtocells, the attocell continuously monitors its radio
environment to ensure that there is zero impact on existing mobile
networks.  This intelligence, combined with its tiny power output, is
likely to make the attocell exempt from regulatory controls and the
requirement for type approval.

In 5mm mode, the traveller simply lays the iPhone on top of the device
and the phone connects automatically, just like a regular femtocell.
Calls can be made using a Bluetooth or wired headset , or by using the
iPhone’s speaker.

“At Ubiquisys we are constantly developing new ways to harness
intelligent cell technology,” said Chris Gilbert, CEO Ubiquisys. “The
attocell innovation is a direct response to meet a specific requirement
from mobile operators.”

The company will showcase the attocell to customers at Mobile World Congress.

Mobiles offer hackers ‘open door’ to sensitive data, says report

0

Cybercriminals are shifting the target of their attacks from traditional infrastructure to mobile users and endpoint devices, according to the 2011 Global Security Report from Trustwave. Research from Trustwave’s SpiderLabs  — the company’s advanced security team responsible for application security, incident response, penetration testing and security research — found that malicious tools became more customised, automated and persistent in 2010.

This trend, combined with the popularity of mobile devices and social media, is providing the perfect recipe for cybercriminals looking to compromise business, customer and user private and sensitive information. The report offers analyses of data compromise investigations, offensive security exercises and defense strategies taken directly from Trustwave’s global client base.

Key report findings

a.. Third-party vendors continue to put companies at risk— 88 per cent of breaches resulting from insecure software code or lax security practices in the management of third-party technology
b.. Cybercriminals “got fresh” in 2010—because in-transit credit card data is usually more recently created (more fresh) than stored data, two-thirds (66 per cent) of investigations found the theft of data in transit
c.. Food and beverage regained its title as the most breached industry—representing 57 per cent of the investigations
d.. A single organised crime syndicate may be responsible for more than 30 per cent of all 2010 data breaches

Evolving threats
Among the most interesting and surprising elements of the report is the rate and sophistication of attacks against mobile platforms and social networking sites. As the security of mobile networks has improved, mobile devices are increasingly the target of attacks, while social networking sites are quickly becoming cybercriminals’ platform of choice to expand and propagate destructive botnets. Drive-by infections and mobile phishing attacks were among the most popular client-side attacks in 2010.

a.. Mobile devices offer cybercriminals an open door to corporate authentication credentials, sensitive data and trade secrets
b.. Geolocation data is helping cybercriminals launch more sophisticated and targeted attacks against social networks
c.. Anti-virus software is losing the battle against malware – the new breed of malware is virtually undetectable by current scanning software

Top strategic security initiatives for 2011
A key take-away from the report is that attacks are often successful in organisations that believed a comprehensive data security strategy was in place. For executives and managers who are tasked with ensuring their company does not suffer a security event, the report offers specific guidance for 2011.

a.. Assess, reduce and monitor client-side attack surface: monitor and inventory applications to measure adherence to standards and evaluate risk
b.. Embrace social networking but educate staff: an established policy and education can help protect against attacks originating from social networking tools
c.. Develop a mobile security programme: gaining control over configurations of mobile devices will help reduce risk
d.. Enforce security upon third-party relationships: choose a platform and vendor with a solid security history, and require vendors to undergo third-party security testing

Robert J. McCullen, chairman and CEO of Trustwave, said, “This year, we expanded the analysis of our compromise investigations, took a deeper look at the expanding and evolving landscape of data security vulnerabilities. In 2011 and beyond, organisations that approach their initiatives firmly committed to including security as an integrated requirement, and not just as a checkbox, will be most resilient to attack, reduce their risk to compromise, and be able to best protect both sensitive data and reputation.”

John Yeo, director of SpiderLabs EMEA, said, “While the myriad of new devices and services around us continue to enable our personal and professional lives, it’s imperative that there is a responsible focus on security at both the organisation and individual level. Criminals seek the path of least resistance and will take any opportunity to get hold of valuable information. We’ve seen that new or poorly managed systems are low-hanging fruit when the security implications have not been fully considered.”

Visa and Wireless Dynamics take accessory approach to iPhone NFC

0

Accessory + app approach being launched in Turkey, with more to follow

Visa Europe and Wireless Dynamics have developed a mobile contactless payment solution using an NFC accessory and an iPhone payment app working together. The solution, that uses an accessory containing the NFC secure element, could be regarded as a “bridging” technology to the deployment of full mobile NFC payments based on NFC-compatible handsets and SIM cards containing the NFC Secure Element.

iPhone users will need to attach a Wireless Dynamics iCarte accessory, which could be available through their bank or mobile operator, to their iPhone and then download the companion Visa Mobile application for iCarte App from the App Store. The iCarte accessory contains an antenna and an embedded Secure Element where the Visa mobile card is safely stored.

This “card”, in turn, works with an app from the App Store to enable payments on the iPhone. Once the Visa mobile card is activated, consumers can start making purchases by launching the app and touching their iPhone on any contactless-enabled point of sale terminal across Europe.

Visa Europe’s first deployment has been launched in collaboration with Yapi Kredi bank and Turkey’s largest mobile operator, Turkcell. Yapi Kredi customers equipped with a Turkcell mobile plan will be the first who can purchase directly from their iPhone at 40,000 contactless point of sale terminals in Turkey using their iCarte payment accessory. The product is also being used in the UK with Visa staff in London with partners FIS, a leading provider of prepaid platforms, and Coventry Building Society. To further commercialise the accessory, Visa Europe will engage its member banks and partner mobile operators in Italy, France, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and the UK.

Although the accessory approach may look like a slightly clunky add-on, merely to access a quick and easy means of payment, it does have the advantage of meaning users can keep their existing and desired phone, rather than have to select an “NFC phone” from a more limited range. It also means operators do not need to distribute NFC SIMs, containing the secure element.

Another aspect of this approach worth noting is that Visa has kept the operators involved. “Bridging” approaches such as stickers and accessories, or SD-Card based approaches, can be seen as cutting out the mobile operator from the transaction and distribution model.

Sandra Alzetta, SVP, Head of Innovation at Visa Europe said, “Given that the availability of a wide range of mobile devices supporting contactless services remains a key hurdle for take-up, we are overcoming this by bringing the capability to the iPhones already in their pockets.”

Ambrose Tam, President and CEO at Wireless Dynamics commented: “Working with Visa Europe to commercialise our iCarte accessories is a leap forward in increasing the number and types of mobile payment solutions. We’ve worked hard to design and build a feature-rich and appealing product for our partners and iPhone users across Europe.”

The Wireless Dynamics iCarte accessory is compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone3G on iOS 3.1 or higher. The iCarte Secure Element can be associated with multiple Visa accounts.

Visa Europe and Wireless Dynamics bring contactless payments to iPhone

Visa Europe and Wireless Dynamics today announced that they have developed a mobile contactless payment solution that will bring Visa contactless payments to iPhone users across Europe.

iPhone users  attach the Wireless Dynamics iCarte accessory, available through their bank or mobile operator, to their iPhone and download the companion Visa Mobile application for iCarte App from the App Store. The iCarte accessory contains an antenna and an embedded Secure Element where the Visa mobile card is safely stored.  This “card”, in turn, works with an app from the App Store to enable payments on the iPhone. Once the Visa mobile card is activated, consumers can start making purchases by simply launching the app and touching their iPhone on any contactless-enabled point of sale terminal across Europe, without the need to enter their PIN.

The iCarte accessory is designed to equip iPhone users with the tools they need to buy goods using mobile contactless technology from a growing number of European retailers. To further commercialise the accessory, Visa Europe will engage its member banks and partner mobile operators in Italy, France, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and the UK, all of which have rapidly maturing contactless payment infrastructures.

Sandra Alzetta, SVP, Head of Innovation at Visa Europe said: “It’s clear from trials across Europe that mobile contactless payment is a strong and compelling customer proposition. Visa recognises that consumers who use smart phones like iPhone are more likely to be early adopters of advanced payment technology. Given that the availability of a wide range of mobile devices supporting contactless services remains a key hurdle for take-up, we are overcoming this by bringing the capability to the iPhones already in their pockets.”

Ambrose Tam, President and CEO at Wireless Dynamics commented: “Working with Visa Europe to commercialise our iCarte accessories is a leap forward in increasing the number and types of mobile payment solutions. Huawei wins stay against Motorola sharing IP with NSN

Huawei says it faces “irreparable damage” if IP is transferred to NSN

The Northen Illinois District Court has partially upheld Huawei’s application to prevent Motorola taking Huawei intellectual property with it when it is bought by Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN). The court issued a temporary restraining order preventing Motorola from transferring information about Huawei’s IP to NSN.

A court statement said, “Defendants Motorola, Inc., Motorola Solutions, Inc., and Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc. (“Motorola”) are hereby ordered not to disclose any of Plaintiff’s confidential information to Defendants Nokia Siemens Networks US LLC and Nokia Siemens Networks B.V. (“NSN”). Defendants are ordered to provide the Court and Plaintiff with immediate written notice of any action taken by MOFCOM concerning the pending transaction between Motorola and NSN.”

Huawei applied yesterday to the District Court to prevent Motorola from “illegally” (in Huawei’s words) transferring Huawei’s intellectual property (IP) to NSN. NSN is lining up a US$1.2 billion acquisition of Motorola’s wireless network business.

Huawei claims that since 2000, it and Motorola have had a cooperative relationship in the radio access network and core network businesses, where Motorola has resold Huawei wireless network products to customers under the Motorola name. During this period, Motorola was provided with products and “confidential Huawei IP”.

Since the July 2010 announcement by NSN of its purchase of Motorola’s wireless network business, Huawei said that it has tried to ensure that Motorola does not transfer this information to NSN – but it has not been convinced by Motorola’s actions.

A Huawei statement said: “Motorola, however, has not responded with assurances that it will prevent disclosure of that information to NSN. If Huawei’s proprietary commercial property and information is transferred to a third party, Huawei will suffer irreparable commercial damage.”

Huawei claims that Motorola’s failure to adopt measures sufficient to ensure that Huawei’s proprietary information remains confidential has compelled the company to file for the appropriate legal protection of its rights.

Spring Mobil implements Cerillion for FMC CRM and billing solution

0

Cerillion Technologies, a provider of customer management systems, today announced the completed implementation of its convergent CRM and billing solution for Spring Mobil, Sweden’s fourth GSM mobile license holder. Based on femtocell technology, Spring Mobil’s FMC service offers dedicated GSM networks to enterprise customers, enabling them to use a single GSM handset as an internal phone extension at work and as a standard mobile phone outside the office.

The Cerillion solution enables Spring Mobil’s sales and customer service staff to manage the complete order-to-cash lifecycle efficiently, while corporate end-users have the flexibility to administer their own services and virtual PBX using the online self-service interface. The system’s rating engine and flexible mediation modules enable complex on-net and off-net calling scenarios to be turned into revenue generating services through configuration only.

Spring Mobil’s billing requirements are complex as calls made in the office are charged at different rates from those made outside. Cerillion’s CRM and billing solution streamlines these processes and accounts for differentiated tariffs and special discounts. The system’s online self-service module also empowers Spring Mobil’s clients to maintain their own services, helping to deliver very high customer satisfaction.

“It is testament to the flexibility and adaptability of our BSS product suite that Spring Mobil chose us to support its innovative business model,” commented Louis Hall, CEO, Cerillion Technologies. “We are delighted to be working with them on their sophisticated pricing models and helping them to manage the total customer experience.”
