Poland boosts smart city credentials with PMP-based network

Poland has enhanced its smart city capabilities with a new microwave-based intelligent transport system (ITS) provided by Cambridge Broadband Networks (CBNL) and systems integrator VSAT System.

The network, in Rzeszow, connects traffic lights, CCTV feeds, ticketing offices, back-up links for potential crises and a dynamic truck weighting system. It will be based on CNBL’s VectaStar point to multipoint microwave platform.

Traffic will be monitored from a central control centre where city employees can track road use. It is hoped the connected network will allow people to plan their journeys by using live traffic information and emergency services can provide a faster response because they can avoid any james.

Both companies said the microwave-based network offers speeds of up to 300MBps, interference free connectivity through licensed spectrum and costs savings of up to 50 percent compared to fibre or point to point microwave.

The two vendors have previously worked together on connectivity projects for the Rzeszow Metropolitan Area, building backhaul for more than 100 public Wi-Fi hotspots and bringing mobile broadband to over 100 city schools and offices.

Leslaw Bandur, Director of IT for the City of Rzeszow, said: “The launch of the ITS is testament to the excellent partnership between the City of Rzeszow and CBNL. We had tremendous success working together when introducing the first smart city capabilities to Rzeszow, enabling us to deliver advanced services and reduce our telecommunication operating costs by more than 60 percent. The performance, flexibility and efficiency of VectaStar was key in supporting us to deliver the ITS. This, together with CBNL and VSAT’s expert consultancy, ensured a smooth and successful roll out.”

Patrick Dravet, VP Sales Europe at CBNL, added: “We’re excited to provide the infrastructure for Rzeszow’s new ITS network and see the city benefit from the solution. VectaStar is ideally suited to smart city deployments such as this thanks to its optimum balance of high capacity, cost efficiency and flexibility. We look forward to continuing our partnership and bringing the benefits of our new 600Mb/s solution to the city in the future.”
