Rwanda sets June 2027 deadline for nationwide 3G shutdown

-

Rwanda has unveiled plans to shut down its 3G network nationwide by 30 June 2027, as the country looks to free up spectrum and investment for expanded 4G and 5G services.

According to the Ministry of ICT and Innovation (MINICT), pilot 3G shutdowns will begin during 2026 ahead of the full national switch-off.

Additionally, a 2G shutdown will follow at a later stage, subject to a readiness assessment covering network coverage, service continuity and access to compatible devices.

MINICT and the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) are coordinating the transition with mobile operators, government agencies, businesses and consumers.

The government said retiring older networks will allow operators to redirect resources towards newer technologies, improving internet speeds, call quality and reliability.

To support the transition, the government is working with device suppliers and private-sector stakeholders to improve access to affordable 4G-enabled handsets.
