Telefónica takes 32Tbps Juniper router for next-gen network upgrade

    -

Telefónica Spain has confirmed Juniper Networks will provide core infrastructure for its upgraded all-IP Fusión Network, which will deliver both fixed and mobile broadband services to its residential, wholesale and enterprise customers.

Telefónica will start the long-term upgrade of its core network imminently. It is expected to complete the project by 2019.

US-based Juniper Networks was added to Telefónica’s list of preferred vendors for its network upgrade in September, supplying its MX Series 3D Universal Edge Router portfolio for the project. Juniper was selected last last year to provide the IP/MPLS metro services delivery infrastructure, from its same MX Series product family, for Telefónica’s Fusión Network.

Juniper said its MX2020 router will provide Telefónica Spain with multi-terabit IP/MPLS routing capacity and connectivity across all its metro regions. The MX2020 is the highest capacity router in its class, with up to 32Tbps of system capacity. It will support future growth in bandwidth on the Telefónica Spain network, the company said.

Joaquin Mata, Chief Technology Officer at Telefónica Spain, said: “Our customers expect a fast, always-on, secure experience, as they connect to cloud-based business services, access bandwidth-hungry TV, video and music content for download and streaming, or use social media sites. Development of a superfast core that can match Fusión Networks service edge network with scale, reliability and minimal latency, is the next step.”

Vince Molinaro, Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer at Juniper Networks, said: “Telefónica Spain is building a new business model, not just a network, to ensure it is able to deliver digital services and content at scale for many years to come. Juniper is pleased to be supporting this transformation from the metro edge to the core.”
