VMO2 rolls out 2Gbps broadband across cable network

-

Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) has begun rolling out its 2Gbps broadband service across its existing cable network.

The upgrade has already been completed in 18 locations, covering around three million homes, with plans to extend the service to most of its cable network by 2027.

Combined with areas already served by Virgin Media’s full fibre network, more than 10 million households can now access its fastest broadband package, Gig2, the telecoms giant revealed.

Customers using the upgraded cable network can expect average download speeds of 2,000Mbps and upload speeds of 100Mbps.

These faster speeds are designed to support growing household internet use, including 4K streaming, online gaming, working from home and multiple connected devices.

VMO2 CTO, Jeanie York, said: “This is an important milestone for our fixed network. Ultimately, people don’t care what kind of pipe is connecting them as long the service is fast, reliable and delivers what is expected.

“By making 2Gbps speeds available over cable for the first time, we’re extending multi-gigabit capability to more parts of the UK and showing the continued potential of our existing network infrastructure that still very much meets the increasing needs of consumers. As demand for data continues to grow, we’re investing across our network to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity.”
