ZTE has released an Android based tablet, along with a separate handset, that it says operators can use to deliver RCS/IMS based services to users.
The device, called the ZTE Light, comes with a phone that can be used along with the device. It is based on Android 2.2 (Froyo) and includes an RCS client, ZTE says, meaning it can take advantage of RCS-based services.
It supports access via 3G, Wi-Fi, FTTx and xDSL, so is being positioned as cross-platform device that can take advantage of cross-platform, IMS-based services. A ZTE spokesperson said Telia will market the device in Sweden, but further details were limited.
ZTE is marketing the device as the endpoint of its zMILE solution, with zMILE standing for ZTE’s Multimedia Integrated Life Experience. The rest of zMILE is filled out by ZTE’s IMS-based core network elements.
RCS is the concept defined by the GSMA to enable devices to take advantage of IM
S-based operator services, and to allow interoperability between networks. There have been trials in France, Italy and Spain, but as yet no commercial launches of RCS services.
