Qualcomm launches new IoT Wi-Fi chips

    -

Qualcomm has added two new Wi-Fi chips to its Internet of Things (IoT) portfolio.

The QCA401x is described by Qualcomm as its new “flagship” chip for connecting low-powered, Wi-Fi enabled smart devices.

The chip features an integrated micro controller unit that can provide up to 800KB of programmable free memory, as well as support for IPv6, HTTP and cloud connectivity.

The QCA401x also features anti-tampering, data integrity and root of trust features, which Qualcomm said would “maximise security in the smallest IoE devices.”

Meanwhile, Qualcomm’s QCA4531 chip is a turnkey solution designed to power IoT hub devices.

The QCA4531 is Linux/OpenWRT programmable and is capable of bridging connectivity between a variety of wireless protocols.

The chip can support up to 16 devices simultaneously while acting as an access point and is suitable for larger and more complex “smart” customer applications, Qualcomm said.

The chipmaker revealed that the QCA4531 is currently being shipped to appliance manufacturers and other IoT-focused customers.

Both solutions come pre-integrated with the AllJoyn IoT software framework.

Joseph Bousaba, Senior Director of Product Management at Qualcomm Atheros, said: “A big part of Qualcomm Atheros’ strategy for the IoE is pairing the right mix of connectivity and computing capabilities from our deep technology portfolios to address the varying needs of the IoE.

“Both the QCA401x and QCA4531 align to this strategy and pair well with the range of offerings from our intelligent connectivity portfolio, including the QCA4002 and QCA4004 solutions, which have shipped in over 35 million products since their launch.”
