    Samsung launches UMA in Europe

    Samsung has made two significant launches into the European market. Above is its P200 UMA phone, which has been launched in Italy, and is due soon in other European markets.

UMA phones are designed to be a user’s only mobile handset, as they can hand off calls between a WLAN hotspot and the cellular network. As such they need to be as attractive as other phones on the market to achieve consumer acceptance. The number of UMA phones on the market is still limited and many found the design of early phones to be disappointing. 
    Samsung’s second launch, pictured below, is of its i320 smartphone, its first such smartphone for the European market. Samsung is hoping that the slimness of this QWERTY key-boarded phone will attract users, Using the Windows Mobile 5.0 OS, the phone also has embedded IM and mobile mail functions.
    Kitae Lee, president of Samsung’s Telecommunications Network Business, said, “The trend and popularity of slim phones will be carried over to the smartphone market.” He added, “Samsung will lead the trend of smartphones by combining its cutting-edge technology and sleek ultra-slim designs.”
