Eutelsat and 4iG sign satellite usage deal

-

The Hungarian service provider has agreed a satellite orbit and frequency usage agreement for the HUGEO geostationary telecom satellite of its HUSAT program and the associated frequency usage rights

Hungary’s 4iG Space and Defence Technologies (4iG SDT) has signed a geostationary orbit and frequency licence agreement with Eutelsat, as part of the foundation of its HUSAT satellite programme. HUSAT is the biggest privately initiated and financed satellite programme in Hungary and in the CEE region, according to the company.

As part of the programme, 4iG SDT plans to launch and operate one geostationary telecommunications (HUGEO) and eight high-resolution Earth observation satellites in low orbit (HULEO) by 2032 and will operate them throughout their lifetime.

The agreement secures the orbital position and associated frequency rights for HUGEO, the geostationary telecommunications satellite of the Hungarian HUSAT programme. It was signed following the binding MoU concluded with Eutelsat in August 2025 and opens a new phase of the HUSAT programme.

As part of the agreement, Eutelsat grants 4iG SDT an exclusive 15-year licence to use the designated geostationary orbital position and associated frequency resources, enabling 4iG SDT to operate the HUGEO telecommunications satellite on this orbital slot after its launch. The exact orbital position, frequency rights and satellite coverage areas remain confidential in accordance with the terms of the agreement.

“Our cooperation with Eutelsat marks the next major milestone of the HUSAT satellite programme, while further strengthening the 4iG Group position as a leading technology player in the region,” said 4iG SDT CEO Dr István Sárhegyi. “The contract also underlines Hungarian space industry ambitions and satellite programme, which are recognised by leading global players.”

Space ambitions

In May 2024, 4iG Group and its subsidiary REMRED laid the foundation stone of Hungary’s first space industry manufacturing centre that will manufacture, assemble, integrate and test satellites weighing up to 400kg, with modular technology (pictured, above). The telecom group established 4iG Space and Technology as a subsidiary in February 2024, transferring its space and technology interests into the new company.

The REMTECH space centre will be the first domestic facility where the HULEO earth observation satellites will be manufactured, and where the 4iG group’s own developed hardware and software systems will also be tested. The GEO satellite will be built with an international partner.

The new unit was made responsible for managing all 4iG’s space and satellite manufacturing, autonomous aircraft development and manufacturing, drone defence, defence industry digitalisation services and business strategy of the companies. At the same time, 4iG acquired a 45% stake in Hungarian aerospace company REMRED.

The process transformed 4iG S&T Zrt. into a holding company, which directly owns the shares of 4iG Plc technology and aerospace companies, including Rotors and Cams, RAC Antidrone., Hungaro DigiTel., Spacecom, CarpathiaSat and REMRED. 4iG acquired Israeli company Spacecom in 2021 and in doing so, gained a satellite operator and service provider with a global coverage, consisting of four geosynchronous satellites, which provides its services in Hungary and the Central and Eastern European region via the AMOS 3 satellite.
