DE-CIX has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Cabo Verde Telecom (CVTelecom) to explore a new South Atlantic interconnection route between Lisbon, Portugal, and São Paulo, Brazil.
As a result, the proposed route would give networks in Europe, West Africa and Latin America a more direct way to exchange data.
It could also reduce the need to send traffic through established hubs in Northern Europe and North America, helping to make international connections more reliable and efficient, the company stated.
Under the planned partnership, CVTelecom would provide the transport capacity needed to connect Lisbon and São Paulo. Meanwhile, DE-CIX would provide access to its interconnection services in Europe and the Americas.
CVTelecom would gain access to DE-CIX’s services in Frankfurt, Madrid, Marseille, New York and São Paulo. In return, DE-CIX would gain access to dedicated transport capacity between Lisbon and São Paulo.
DE-CIX Head of Emerging Wholesale Markets, Theresa Bobis, said: “Digital growth increasingly depends on resilient, diverse, and geographically distributed connectivity.
“Together with Cabo Verde Telecom, we want to create a new interconnection corridor across the South Atlantic that brings digital ecosystems in Europe, Africa, and Latin America closer together. More direct data routes can improve performance, strengthen infrastructure resilience, and open up new opportunities for businesses and network operators across all three regions.”
CVTelecom, Chief Marketing Officer, Isa Neves, added: “Partnering with DE-CIX represents an important step in strengthening Cape Verde’s position as a strategic digital gateway between Africa, Europe, and the Americas.
“By combining CVTelecom’s international connectivity capabilities with DE-CIX’s global interconnection ecosystem, we aim to enhance connectivity, resilience, and access to digital services, creating new value for our customers while contributing to the continued digital development of Cape Verde and the wider West African region.”
