Ericsson and Telia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on the development of 6G technology in Sweden.
As a result, the partnership will focus on exploring new 6G technology while continuing to build on existing 5G networks, with plans including testing new features, improving network security, coverage and performance.
Meanwhile, the pair will also ork with universities, startups, businesses and government organisations to support Sweden’s 6G development.
To mark the announcement, which was made at at the Ericsson Studio in Stockholm, where Ericsson President and CEO Per Narvinger and Telia President and CEO Patrik Hofbauer attended, the pair carried out one of the Nordic region’s first wireless demonstrations of early 6G technology using the upper 6 GHz frequency band.
The demonstration showed how the technology could deliver faster connections, greater network capacity and better upload speeds. These improvements could help support future AI applications and real-time video services, the telecoms giant revealed.
Meanwhile, a second demonstration showed how mobile networks could be used to detect and track drone.
Ericsson, Head of Europe, Middle East and Africa, Patrick Johansson said: “Sweden and the Nordic region have a proud tradition of being early adopters of mobility. Today’s announcement indicates our companies’ intention to continue that tradition. We look forward to working closely with Telia on the path to 6G.”
Anders Olsson, Head of Telia Sweden, added: “Our investments in robust, secure and comprehensive 5G networks serve as a natural stepping-stone towards the next generation of connectivity: 6G. We are now bringing together industry, academia and the public sector to ensure Sweden takes a leading role in 6G development, based on the needs of society and businesses, and to contribute to a more secure and competitive Sweden.”
