Pÿur and Eurofiber sign Berlin fibre deal to expand network reach

Eurofiber becomes Pÿur’s first wholesale partner in boost for open access networks

Tele Columbus subsidiary Pÿur Vertrieb & Service has signed a framework agreement with Eurofiber Network that will see the operator use the wholesaler’s fibre network in Berlin. Eurofiber is laying fibre through district heating ducts and is aiming to connect more than 500,000 households and businesses, using FTTH and FTTB connections, over the coming years. Pÿur announced in February that it is aiming to supply more than one million Berliners with fibre connections over its own network.

Eurofiber is Pÿur’s first wholesale partner. Over the coming months, all technical prerequisites will be put in place so that more households in Berlin can access Pÿur’s services via Eurofiber’s fibre network. According to Golem, Eurofiber uses XGS-PON throughout its network. Eurofiber (formerly Vattenfall Eurofiber when the energy company was involved) commissioned its first two sites with XGS-PON OLTs in April 2022.

“Alongside the fibre connections in our existing network, building FTTH wholesale partnerships is a key element of our growth story,” said Pÿur chief consumer officer Jochen Busch. “We are pleased that our cooperation with Eurofiber creates new opportunities for our successful growth strategy.”

“With the expansion of our marketing footprint to include the Eurofiber fibre network, even more Berliners will in future gain access to the best internet and bundled offers in Germany,” added Pÿur senior director products and growth Stephan Kalleder.

“Pÿur and Eurofiber share a common goal: to provide real fibre access to the people of Berlin. Together, we are delivering speed, stability and choice to where they are needed most,” said Eurofiber CEO Chris Bakx.

“This partnership sends a strong signal to the market: open access works – and it creates space for innovation, competition and genuine customer focus,” added Eurofiber Netz wholesale director Simon Schmidt.

Eurofiber Netz is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Eurofiber Group, based in the Netherlands. Last February, Eurofiber acquired the shares held by Vattenfall Wärme Berlin AG in their joint venture, Vattenfall Eurofiber, making it the sole shareholder of the Berlin-based company.

From the earliest days of the joint venture back in 2021, it had been agreed that Eurofiber would eventually acquire the majority of shares. The company aims to provide fiberoptic access to at least 500,000 households and businesses. To achieve this goal, Vattenfall allowed use of its tunnel system in Berlin, covering more than 700km, while Eurofiber contributed its expertise as a digital infrastructure provider to the joint venture.

As of December 2024, Berlin has fibre optic coverage of 40.8% and gigabit coverage of 95.7%. The goal of the Gigabit Capital Berlin programme is to roll out comprehensive and high-performance 5G mobile and fiber optic networks by 2025 and 2028, respectively.
