    Qualcomm aims to make premium features cheaper with new Snapdragon chip


    Qualcomm is aiming to bring better AI experiences, camera features and download speeds to mid-tier Android devices with launch of a new Snapdragon chip.

    The chip is the first in Qualcomm’s 700 range, which was announced at Mobile World Congress earlier this year. The company said it wanted to range to bring “premium-tier features to a broader audience” and improve upon what was offered by its lower tier 600 range.

    A multi-core AI engine delivers two times the performance of its Snapdragon 660 product, Qualcomm claimed, allowing users to take and share photos and videos that tap into the context of their surroundings.

    Qualcomm’s new Spectra 250 image signal processor can deliver photos of up to 32MP, as well as low light, fast autofocus and noise reduction. 

    The solution also supports 4K HDR playback, which is a first for Qualcomm outside of its 800 premium tier of products.

    Its X15 LTE modem will support speeds of up to 800MBps, 4×4 MIMO and licence assisted access.

    Qualcomm claimed its battery would deliver 40 percent less power consumption when using gaming and 4K HDR video viewing and a 20 percent reduction when streaming video compared to its Snapdragon 660.

    Additionally, it said the chipset would deliver a 20 percent improvement in performance, 25 percent quicker web browsing and 15 percent quicker app launch time compared to the 660.

    “By incorporating key AI capabilities and performance advancements, the Snapdragon 710 is designed to transform our customers products into the ultimate personal assistant, enhancing critical everyday consumer experiences, such as high-end camera features that will benefit from on-device high-speed AI processing, without sacrificing battery life.”
