Qualcomm broadens Snapdragon span, launches new Wi-Fi solutions

    -

Qualcomm has extended its Snapdragon Internet of Things chips to help support devices for children and the elderly, as well as launching new Wi-Fi solutions.

The Snapdragon Wear 1100 processor is aimed at specific IoT markets, where users are requiring a small device, long battery lives, smarter sensing and secure location services.

It features the likes of a power save mode and Category 1 modem with LTE and 3G global support. It uses Qualcomm’s iZat, an integrated location engine that offers enhanced accuracy and power optimisation.

Anthony Murray, Senior Vice President and General Manager, IoT, Qualcomm Technologies International, said: “We are delighted to add Snapdragon Wear 1100 to our Snapdragon Wear family, thus making it easier for customers to develop connected wearables with targeted use cases such as kid and elderly tracking.”

Qualcomm also announced a new QCA4012 chip, which enables dual-band Wi-Fi, enhanced security and low power. The chipset maker said it, and the wider QCA401x range of chips, would now support Apple HomeKit, Google Weave and AllJoyn IoT solutions.

It has also teamed up with cloud service providers Ayla, Exosite and IOTA Labs to help developers produce the likes of APIs and other tools to support the integration with IoT clouds.

Finally, Qualcomm has launched a family of tri-band 802.11ac platforms that it said could power more efficient Wi-Fi devices by bringing the likes of MU-MIMO and Wi-Fi SON to mainstream routers.

The two platforms can be combined with Qualcomm’s radio devices to offer consumers greater capacity, with self-managing functionality allocating capacity according to real-time conditions.
