Ruckus Wireless has launched SPoT, a cloud-based positioning service aimed at enabling new, location-based services over its Wi-Fi networks.
SPoT is embedded with a patented Indoor Positioning Algorithm gained from the company’s recent acquisition of YFind Technologies. Ruckus said that new and existing Smart Wi-Fi access points would now be capable of accurate client positioning for indoor or dense urban environments, where GPS service is unavailable.
It also claimed that unlike other solutions on the market, SPoT is more accurate, utilises new and existing Ruckus Smart APs, does not require a device for signal processing or a client app and offers APIs for third party developers. It can also use third party analytics.
The solution includes an analytics dashboard, a web-based tool that allows floor plans to be uploaded, and a calibrator mobile application that allows network operators to perform RF fingerprint calibration of any given environment.
It also comes with a SDK and a set of APIs allowing software developers to build location-intelligent features into mobile applications for vertical markets. The solution will be available in the second quarter of 2014.
Rukus said it is working with partners including location analytics companies such as Euclid and Skyrove, and mobile application development specialists such as Front Porch, ITC Infotech, Purple WiFi, SangInfo and TechStudio.
