Whether the Romanian operator group can repeat its profitable success in its home market and Spain remains to be seen
The Romanian operator group, Digi Communications has acquired a 51% stake the UK altnet Whyfibre.
This is what Digi said about its actions and plans:
The Company hereby informs investors that it has taken the initial steps to enter the
telecommunications market in the United Kingdom. On 19 March 2026, its wholly owned
subsidiary incorporated in England, Fiber One Ltd., acquired 51% of the share capital of
Whyfibre Limited, which owns a fibre network currently under deployment in the counties of
Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire in southern England (the “Network”). Fiber One Ltd. is the
operator of the Network and expects to commence the provision of fixed broadband services on
a pilot basis in the near future.
Digi Group has established itself as a leading telecoms disruptor in Europe, led by CEO Serghei Bulgac (pictured). Its hallmarks are rapid, organic growth, low prices and a strong focus on fibre infrastructure. Its revenues have almost tripled in the last 10 years, driven primarily by its success in Romania and its expansion in the Spanish market. It also has opcos in Belgium, Italy and Portugal.
It will be interesting to see how it fares in a what is seen as a tough market, where the perception is that more players keen to exit the altnet broadband sector than join it as competition and consolidation bite.
