MDM has unveiled plans for two new submarine cable systems connecting Ireland with the United States, in a deal worth $500 million.
As a result, Narwhal 1 will connect the existing cable landing station in Galway with Long Island in the US, whereas, Narwhal 2 will connect a new cable landing station in the south of Ireland with New Jersey.
The new cables will connect with other existing and planned cable systems in Ireland. These include the Pisces System, linking Galway with Spain, France and Portugal, a planned Galway-to-Norway cable, and several Ireland-to-UK systems.
This will provide additional connections from Ireland to Europe, the UK and North America, the company revealed.
This comes as the company is currently working on the required permits, with marine surveys also being arranged, with Narwhal 1 is expected to be ready for service in Q3 2029, while Narwhal 2 is planned for 2030, respectively.
The two projects are being funded by private equity and industry partners, with a total investment of $500 million.
In a statement posted on LinkedIn, Director and Co-founder Jim McMahon said: “Demand for transatlantic connectivity is forecast to increase significantly over the next five years. MDM, through a combination of its extensive in-house capabilities and its existing landing station infrastructure, is uniquely placed to fast-track these exciting projects.”
