Proximus first to launch 5G SA in Belgium

-

Only 2.8% of all European 5G connections use a 5G SA network, compared with 32% in North America and 80% in China

Proximus has launched Belgium’s first 5G Standalone (or as it prefers to call it, 5G+) network the first in Belgium to do so. The operator also points out that according to a recent international study by Omdia and Ookla, only 2.8% of all European 5G connections use a 5G SA network, compared with 32% in North America and 80% in China.

Proximus’ introduction of 5G SA will be phased. From today, business customers on the Mobile Connect and Together Mobile rate plans with a compatible 5G+ SIM card can access 5G+ services, although for the moment, only the Google Pixel 9 and 10 models are eligible.

Proximus says it is certifying its 5G+ network with several other smartphone manufacturers. In summer, 5G+ will be available to residential customers and small businesses, and the feature will be extended to eSIM.

The operator’s 5G coverage extends to 92% of the population but plans “near-total nationwide coverage by the end of 2026”.

Proximus stresses that cloud-native network core improves the network’s stability during traffic surges. It also offers better call quality due using Voice over 5G (VoNR) and better data service simultaneously, while paving the way for network slicing for use cases like emergency services, secure payments and media applications.

5G+ can support more connected devices at the same time, and stronger encryption of SIMs and identity data.

Geert Standaert, Network Lead at Proximus, said, “We want to provide all our customers – residential and professional – with the best experience anytime, anywhere, and enable them to unlock the innovative potential of 5G technology…we are proud to be the first in Belgium to bring this next-generation 5G technology to Belgium.”
