Ericsson lands DOCOMO contract for AI-ready RAN infrastructure

-

Ericsson has been selected by NTT DOCOMO to supply its next-generation RAN Compute platform for the operator’s network in Japan, including its 5G rollout.

As a result, the platform is designed to support 4G, 5G and 5G Advanced services, alongside the processing power needed for AI and machine lerning applications.

The move hopes to give operators a more flexible network that can continue to evolve through future software updates, the telecom giant revealed.

Deployment began in July last year and is expected to help DOCOMO maintain network performance for customers.

The new RAN Compute platform is based on Ericsson’s latest generation of silicon and is designed to improve both performance and energy efficiency.

Additionally, the company stated that is helps deliver up to wice the processing capacity of its previous-generation baseband products while consuming less than half the energy.

That increased efficiency is expected to reduce operating costs and improve the performance of Centralised Radio Access Network (C-RAN) deployments.

Masafumi Masuda, Senior Vice President, General Manager of Radio Access Network Design Department, NTT DOCOMO, said: “DOCOMO is promoting the enhancement of network processing capacity to maintain and improve communication quality while meeting the growing traffic demand.

“Ericsson’s RAN Compute platform will strongly support our infrastructure strategy thanks to its high processing performance. We will continue to deepen our partnership with Ericsson to build a flexible network platform that anticipates the future use of AI and deliver the best communication experience to our customers.”

Yukiko Sato, Board Director and Head of Customer Unit NTT Group of Ericsson Japan, added: “We are proud of Ericsson’s ability to offer the market’s most advanced and efficient RAN Compute technology through our trust-based partnership with DOCOMO.

“The RAN Compute platform will not only address DOCOMO’s network traffic needs but also enhance environmental sustainability and reduce operating costs.”
