Ofcom has invited interested organisations to apply for access to the Airwave ‘sharers’ list’. 

Airwave is the national secure digital radio network dedicated for the exclusive use of the UK’s emergency services and those organisations with a recognised public safety responsibility. Airwave is part of HMG Critical National Infrastructure and is designed to stay working even during major incidents. 

Airwave will offer comprehensive guaranteed levels of coverage across 98% of England, Wales and Scotland. This means that users can stay in instant communication even in remote areas and under the challenging conditions that any responder to an emergency will face and where radio coverage has often failed in the past.

Access to Airwave is via the Airwave sharers’ list, which is administered by Ofcom and defines those emergency services and organisations with a public safety responsibility. Access to the Airwave Sharer List is subject to a successful application to Ofcom, demonstrating your organisation’s public safety remit and emergency communication requirements. 

Already 100 public safety organisations are able to access the service.

HM Prison Service is the latest user to adopt the Airwave service, joining an expanding user base that includes the Highways Agency, MoD Police and various local authority emergency planners as well as the emergency services.

Inclusion on the sharers list does not mean that an organisation has an automatic right to use the Airwave network, or that it is required to do so.The effect of inclusion only means that O2 Airwave may make the network service available. It is then up to the parties to develop the specific service required to meet the communication needs of each organisation and to agree contract terms.

Sierra Wireless and Onda team to provide solution

Sierra Wireless today announced it has signed an agreement with Onda Communication Spa to distribute a new EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) wireless wide area network PC Card for use on the Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) GSM, GPRS  and EDGE Network. This commercial launch of the ONDA EDGE/GPRS N775 PC Card marks the worldwide premiere of Sierra Wireless’ EDGE product line.

The ONDA N775, manufactured by Sierra Wireless, is a third-generation (3G) quad-band wireless wide area network card operating on 850/900/1800/1900 MHz frequencies, which allows for worldwide roaming on GSM, GPRS, and EDGE networks. It offers typical data speeds of between 100 and 130 kbps, with bursts of up to 216 kbps when used on EDGE networks – up to three times the speed of a GPRS connection. Volantis, the worlds leading supplier of Intelligent Content Adaptation solutions, announces the immediate availability of Message Preparation Server (MPS) version 3.

With MPS, mobile network operators and content providers can broadcast a single message from one platform in multiple message formats such as WAP push, MMS, SMS and HTML email.

MPS intelligently adapts the message to support the full capabilities of individual devices such as screen size, colour, multi-media and message type support.  Over 1000 individual devices are supported.

“Intelligent message fallback” can be used to adapt each message to a simpler message-type if an advanced type is not supported. For example, MPS will automatically deliver an SMS text message if a mobile device does not support MMS messages. On October 12, 2004, Sonera will launch the commercial use of its UMTS network in twenty locations in Finland.

Mobile working, which has been on the rise, and diversifying mobile services set higher requirements for the capacity and data transmission rate of the network. The data transmission rate of Sonera’s UMTS network is 384 kbps at its best. High-speed data transmission is useful, for instance, when the user opens email attachment files, browses the Internet or sends video. Faster data transmission also makes it smoother to use video content, listen to music and play games.

“Our aim is to have the highest quality network in Finland, regardless of the technology, so that our customers can use the services they wish with the devices they choose. We believe that by opening our UMTS network in twenty locations, we offer the most extensive 3G service in Finland right from the start. Network to be expanded according to demand
Sonera’s customers will be able to use the faster data transmission offered by the UMTS network by acquiring a UMTS phone  and a Sonera 3G card from a Sonera dealer. Voice calls and text messages in the UMTS network will cost the same as in the GSM network. Likewise, data transmission will be priced according to the current pricing regimes as regards both consumer and corporate services.

The network will be expanded according to demand. In addition to building the UMTS network, Sonera also continues to introduce other high-speed data transmission methods, such as EDGE, into the GSM network.

The currently available terminal devices operate either with GPRS/EDGE or with GPRS/UMTS technology. The first tri-mode GPRS/EDGE/UMTS terminal is expected to be launched by the end of this year, and Sonera believes that tri-mode terminals will become common later on. Sonera expects mass markets for the third generation mobile communications to arise when there are a sufficient number of low-end terminals on the market.

The UMTS network has been in pre-commercial use since December 2003. Over 1,000 users at about 30 companies have participated in the pre-commercial use. These companies have utilized the network in their own service development. Sonera has received a great deal of valuable feedback on the pre-commercial use and has utilized the feedback in developing the network.

Telcordia Technologies, a global provider of telecommunications software and services, today announced that Greece’s National Telecommunications and Post Commission, also known as EETT, has successfully launched the Telcordia Number Portability Clearinghouse solution, which has now been in operation for six months, enabling fixed line and mobile number portability for all service providers in Greece. 

The solution, which went fully operational for mobile customers in April 2004 and for fixed line customers in June 2004, puts Greece in compliance with the European Union number portability mandate and, ultimately, provides all Greek residents with more choice.

“Telcordia’s clearinghouse solution enables EETT to effectively manage the complexity and the speed at which number porting transactions must be processed,” said Emmanuel Giakoumakis, President of the EETT. “Now, Greek consumers have unprecedented competitive choice for fixed line and mobile service and service providers can embrace new market opportunities and new revenue streams.”

Part of a five-year exclusive contract, the Telcordia solution enables fixed line and mobile number portability to Greece’s 14 million phone lines, including 5.5 million fixed line and 10 million mobile lines.  Telcordia and its in-country regional subcontractor, Spirit S.A., have worked closely with EETT and Greek carriers to get relevant business processes agreed upon, integrated and fully implemented.

Telcordia’s Number Portability Clearinghouse is a highly scalable software system that addresses the inherent challenges in number porting. Implemented to support all service providers in Greece, Telcordia’s solution enables flow-through automation for the porting of numbers in and out of wireline and wireless carriers’ networks with trouble-free efficiency. The Telcordia solution offers multiple standard interfaces for service providers to automate their flow through for the porting process as well as direct access to the clearinghouse. Telcordia’s regional subcontractor, Spirit S.A., operates the data center that serves as the in-country clearinghouse and provides first-level support, help desk support, training and other support services to Greek service providers.
